The metro area's fourth Hollywood Feed store is now open in Madison.

Located at 111 Colony Crossing Way, Suite 420, the store sits between Papitos Mexican Grill and Sta-Home Health.

Step into the 2,640-square-foot store in Madison, and you'll find an assortment of American-made pet foods, a large variety of all-natural bones and chews, and pretty cookies and treats made at Hollywood Feed's bakery in Memphis. Collars, leashes and pet toys fill an entire wall and shelves showcase dog beds, including a line stitched in Tupelo.

Jorie Coleman of Ridgeland, left, assistant manager at Hollywood Feed in Madison, holds Bebe and offers a treat to Dampey, who is held by her owner, Christina Jordan of Canton.

Customers are allowed to shop with their pets at the store, and pets receive a treat and have pictures taken for on the store's Facebook page.

"I'm on a first-name basis with a lot of our customers," said Jessica Thomasson of Madison, manager of the Madison store. "I know their names and the names of their dogs. We like to think we're part of their dog's life."

On a recent Friday, Christina Jordan of Canton recently stopped by with two of her dogs, Bebe and Dampey, to pick up dog beds.

"Hollywood Feed has many different things from food to beds," she said. "The quality is amazing."

A hallmark of the chain is customer service plus product knowledge that employees develop from training they receive, Thomasson said. Employees receive 40+ hours of training annually.

Jessica Thomasson of Madison, manager of Hollywood Feed in Madison, adds additional merchandise to a wall of pet toys at the store.

"Our CEO likes to say, 'You're not in the retail business but customer service business,'" Thomasson said. "We always offer to take your product out to your car and to load up your bag of food for you. That's something we take pride in."

Hollywood Feed was established in 1950 as the local feed store on Hollywood Street in Memphis.  The Memphis Zoo, Memphis Animal Services and the Memphis police force were among the store's original house accounts.

The company changed its name to Hollywood Pet Star in the early 1980s and new owners, Shawn McGhee and family, changed it back to its original name when they bought the company in 2006.

Natural and holistic pet food is a large part of what's sold at Hollywood Feed, Thomasson said, with brands including Zignature, ACANA, Country Naturals, Fromm, Taste of the Wild, Nutrisource, Koha, Orijen, Weruva and others.

"We get quite a few questions about the dog food we sell," Thomasson said. "Every dog is different. I direct a customer based upon what their dog's needs are. We do tons of training each month and feel confident in our training about pet nutrition."

Julianne Ranis of Brandon, third key at Hollywood Feed in Madison, straightens dog beds.

Fromm is the most popular brand of dog food sold at Hollywood Feed, she said.

"Fromm is a fifth-generation, family-owned business that has been around since 1904," she said. "They've never had a recall on any dry food."

Also popular are Orijen and ACANA brands, which are known for a high meat content, she said.

The Honest Kitchen brand has made a name for itself by being made with human food-grade ingredients, she said. "It's the closest brand to a home-cooked meal for your dog," she said.

While the store focuses mainly food and merchandise for dogs and cats, it does sell alfalfa hay, she said. Rabbits eat the hay as food, and the hay is often used as bedding for pet guinea pigs.

The store also sells raw goat's milk, which can be fed to infant animals that lack access to mother's milk, Thomasson said.

"You can feed it to puppies and emaciated dogs," she said. "It helps them get to the point where they can eat a regular diet. It's a great source of probiotics."

Hollywood Feed offers a 100 percent guarantee on any product, including food. "If your pet doesn't love it or you don't love it, we'll gladly replace it or refund your money," Thomasson said. Food that customers return is donated to a local pet rescue group, she said.

The store will also price match, has regular sales and has a frequent buyer program for the Fromm brand of food, Thomasson said.

The Madison store partners with the Mississippi Animal Rescue League in Jackson, Community Animal Rescue and Adoption (CARA) in Jackson, Jackson Friends of the Animal Shelter, Coco's House Senior Sanctuary in Terry and Rescue Revolution in Madison.

"We hold in-store adoptions usually on Saturday with the rescue groups we partner with," Thomasson said, noting that is also participants in fundraisers for the rescue organizations.

The Madison store increases the number of Hollywood Feed stores in Mississippi to seven as it joins those in Ridgeland, Flowood, Jackson, Olive Branch, Oxford and Southaven. The chain has more than 95 stores across 14 states

Hollywood Feed in Madison is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. and on Sunday from 11:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.
