Which Bone Is Used for Bone Grafting in the Mouth?

Which bone is used for bone grafting in the mouth? There are several different types of bone graft material available for grafting after an extraction or before a dental implant. The most commonly used bone graft materials in the United States are allograft, xenograft and autograft. Allograft is the most commonly used bone graft material. Allograft means the bone graft material comes from another human. It is a donor tissue that is very safe to use, and the body receives it very well.

Autograft is another type of bone grafting material. Autograft means that the bone has been taken from the candidate who has been... who is receiving the bone. This means it is your own bone being placed into the graft. Many times the graft material can be taken from the hip or other parts of the jaw. Xenograft is the third type of bone graft material that is most commonly used in the United States, and this means it is coming from another type of animal. Bovine or cow bone, is most commonly used, and porcine or pig bone, is also used.

Sometimes a doctor will choose to mix all three together to increase the strength and longevity of the graft. Autograft is most likely to be received by the patient since it is their own bone. This is the best type of graft material used, but it has risks in the donor site. Allograft is also well-received by the patient and does not have any more avidity associated with a donor site, since it is a donor tissue and comes in a vial. This type of material is also well-received by the body and typically will be replaced within a few months by the patient's own bone.

Xenograft or bone graft material from another animal, is used many times when the patient needs something that will last longer or hold the space for a greater amount of time. Xenograft can be found two years or even more within the recipient site when looked at histologically. So the three most common types of bone graft material being used for dental implants are autograft, allograft, and xenograft. It is best that your doctor chooses which one would be best for your scenario.
