Black Mirror Season 5 Episode 2 Who Died

Black Mirror: Andrew Scott stars in 'Smithereens' episode

Black Mirror episode Smithereens was undoubtedly one of the tensest and action-packed episodes of season five after it was released on Netflix on June 5. Smithereens follows troubled taxi driver Chris (played by Andrew Scott) who takes young intern Jaden (Damson Idris) hostage, resulting in a tense shoot-out with the police. The ending of the episode saw shots fired by the armed police, leaving fans wondering if Chris really died at the end of Smithereens.

Did Chris die at the end of Smithereens?

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from Black Mirror Smithereens.

Smithereens came to an end after Chris finally made his phone call with Smithereens creator Billy Bauer (Topher Grace).

Chris had been racked with guilt following the death of his fiancée in a car crash after checking his Smithereens account three years earlier.

Scott's character blamed himself and the Smithereens app for the death of his fiancée and his final wish was to let CEO Billy Bauer know.

Black Mirror fans witnessed Chris use Smithereens intern Jaden as a bargaining chip to get through to Billy.

After his conversation with Billy, Chris told Jaden he was going to kill himself, leading to a scuffle as the hostage tried to wrestle the gun from him.

As the pair brawled, CS Linda Grace (Monica Dolan) ordered one of her police officers to fire a shot at Chris, even if it meant killing him.

The markswoman fired one shot as the pair continued to grapple and missed both Chris and Jaden.

She was ordered by CS Grace to shoot again and it appears the second time she was more successful.

However, Black Mirror fans never see exactly what happened after the second shot is fired, casting doubt over whether Chris was actually killed or not.

Unfortunately for Black Mirror viewers, the fate of Chris and Jaden is entirely left up to interpretation, although the reaction of a number of the Smithereens characters suggest Scott's character had been killed.

Chris' body after the second shot is fired is never shown, but, as the end credits roll, the markswoman moves her eye away from the scope of her gun – implying her job had been accomplished.

DS Grace's reaction also suggests the cab driver had been shot.

The Black Mirror character is shown slowly lowering a pair of binoculars from her eyes, seemingly stunned at what she just witnessed.

Billy, who had tried tirelessly to get through to Chris and empathised with him, was also visibly distressed after receiving a mobile notification while in the USA.

The Smithereens CEO shut his eyes in disbelief after a message, presumably informing him about the shooting, came through.

As the credits come to an end, it shows a number of normal people going back to their day-to-day lives, including Billy.

Chris' death, no matter how hard-hitting and harrowing it was to Black Mirror viewers, was nothing more than a beep on the mobile phone's to those around the world.

One thing that remains unclear if fans take Chris' death as a given is the fate of Jaden.

Jade could easily have been shot as well by the markswoman.

Several times in the episode, shots are held back by the police at the risk of hitting Jaden as well.

Could the Smithereens intern have found himself fatally wounded as well?

Or could Chris' gun have gone off and killed him once he was shot by the police?

All these questions will likely be answered in future Black Mirror episodes if the Netflix series decides to revisit former episodes in one giant Easter egg-filled bonanza – just like The Black Museum.

Black Mirror season 5 is available to stream on Netflix now.
